Excess Deaths refer to changes in deaths above what is expected.
This is a standard calculation used widely in health statistics, because it is a very important tool for understanding the health of a given population - whether a province, a country, or even the whole world.
The calculation involves determining the typical rate of death in a population, and using that as a baseline to compare with what actually happened. If there are more deaths than expected, that is Excess Death.
Alberta Excess Deaths Data
Statistics Canada is a Government of Canada Ministry that maintains Excess Death data for the country, provinces, and territories of Canada, available at this link. In the charts below, this data is summarized by year. The 2023 data was up to week 43, so the final figure will be higher.
If you download the data for Excess Deaths, you can produce a chart with the following results:

Looking at the totals in the final column, you can see Alberta is nearing 15,000 total Excess Deaths, with the year's figures not completed. About one third of those are people 44 or younger, so the Excess Deaths crisis effects all ages.
Excess Deaths Compared To COVID Deaths
The same chart is expanded below, adding two more rows. First, a row in green showing the number of people that died with a COVID classification. Second, a row in blue shows the ratio of Excess to COVID deaths.

As you can see, Excess Deaths have been more than COVID deaths every year. Looking at the blue row, you can see Excess Deaths were about double COVID Deaths every year, but in 2023 Excess Deaths were nearly TEN TIMES COVID deaths.
While about 300 deaths in 2023 were attributed to COVID, nearly 3,000 Excess Deaths occurred.
There are similar numbers being reported around the world, so the Excess Deaths Crisis is not just an Alberta problem it is also a Canada and the world problem.
We do not know what is causing these Excess Deaths, and there may be more than one cause. There were a number of policy changes that occurred at the same time, and we need to accurately and impartially study them to know what is causing the Excess Deaths.
That is why your help is so important.
This Crisis Can Be Stopped - With Media Attention
For some reason, the media has given this issue only a fraction of the attention that it gave to COVID, meaning few in the public are even aware of the Excess Deaths Crisis, and without the public's attention, there is a lack of political will to solve the problem.
If we can spur the media to act on this information and sound the alarm in Alberta, we can save lives by determining the causes of the Excess Deaths.
And we might be able to prompt similar action in other jurisdictions, and save even more lives!
The media is generally owned by the same types of investors around the world. Our "local" news is just a small part of their overall portfolio, and while making us healthy may not be of interest to them, it is of vital importance to us. After four years with too little media attention on the Excess Deaths Crisis, the media needs to know we want to hear more from them!
